Oral sex isn’t really sex!

Having sex will make me popular!

If he loves me then he’ll say yes!

I’m only 14. I can’t get pregnant.

Everybody’s doing it!

Oral sex isn’t really sex!
What! So putting your mouth on someone else’s private parts doesn’t count as sex because…? Let’s just clear the record! Oral sex is a form of sexual activity! Any time there is an exchange of body fluids you put yourself at risk for a Sexually Transmitted Disease. What? But I’m not having intercourse? Like we already said, there is still an exchange of body fluids. Plus there are some STD’s, like HPV, that can be transmitted by skin-to-skin contact. That means that even with intimate touching there is a risk of getting an STD. Along with the risk to your health there is also the risk to your emotions. The feelings of being used simply for someone else’s sexual pleasure are not limited to intercourse.

Having sex will make me popular!
Look, people should like you for who you are and not what you do! It’s true that in some groups having sex will increase popularity. However, your reputation for being easy may be more attractive to them than anything else and when they go out with you they might expect to have sex with you. We all know that there’s a double standard for guys and girls. If guys have a lot of sex they are considered a stud. But if girls have sex, many times they are looked at as a slut. Don’t ruin your reputation for something as unpredictable as popularity.
Remember no one should ever pressure another person into having sex Real friend’s respect each other’s right to make their own choices.

If he loves me then he’ll say yes!
Let’s face it, now guys aren’t the only ones pressuring people into having
sex with them. You are just as likely to place a little pressure on your guy and what better way than to start with the “if you loved me…” Let me remind you that it is never o.k. to pressure anyone into having sex. No one should do anything that they don’t want to do. Also, if your guy is saying no then maybe he is considering some of the consequences; like STD’s*, an unplanned pregnancy* and let’s not forget the emotional hurt that can come later. Sure sex can be fun, but when you are sitting at home with the baby that came out of your fun while all your other friends are out having a good time, you just might wish that you had listened to your guy when he was saying that he wanted to wait!

I’m only 14. I can’t get pregnant.
Sorry girls, but there were 507 births to girls age 14-years-old and under in the state of Florida in the year 2001 alone.* There are reported cases of girls as young as 10 years old getting pregnant! Oh, and by the way, you can get pregnant the first time! Don’t fool yourself into a false sense of reality. Get the facts and make an informed decision. No one can make your choices for you! Consider the cost of having sex now. Babies are wonderful, but talk to some teen moms and they will tell you that it’s not all fun and games. It’s not like babysitting. At the end of the night you can’t give them back. Abstinence is the only 100% effective way to prevent pregnancy.

Everybody’s doing it!
Wrong! Everybody’s not doing it. In fact over 54% of youth today
are choosing not to do it. That number has gone up since 1999. This is just something that is said to pressure you into having sex before you’re ready. More and more young people are choosing to remain abstinent. Check out the Guess Who’s Waiting section to hear from other people that have made the decision to wait.
